The operational reality

Overcoming the Dermatology Talent Deficit

An unfilled dermatology post is rarely just a staffing gap. It is capped clinic capacity, a lengthening waiting list, and a rota that depends on locum cover your budget was never built to absorb. The department stabilises the moment the right permanent appointment is in place, not before.

What this costs a department

  • A consultant post open for months, capping clinic capacity while the waiting list lengthens.
  • Locum and agency spend absorbing budget that a permanent appointment would release.
  • Generalist medical recruiters forwarding candidates with no meaningful dermatology exposure.
  • Specialist register status taken on trust from a CV, rather than checked against the GMC record.
  • Clinical leadership time consumed by a search process instead of the department itself.
  • An expansion or new-site plan stalled because it cannot open without a clinical lead in post.

Our engagement model

  • GMC number and specialist register entry for dermatology checked against the public record — responsibility for verifying registration remains yours as the employer.
  • NMC registration and revalidation date checked, never assumed from a stated PIN; final verification remains your responsibility.
  • Where you are a CQC-registered provider, candidates are screened against Regulation 19 as standard.
  • Competency matched to your case mix — medical, surgical, paediatric, phototherapy or cosmetic.
  • A shortlist of three to five candidates, typically within three to five working days of engagement.
  • Every permanent placement is backed by the full twelve-week replacement guarantee from day one.

Engage a specialist recruiter

No retainer. No obligation. A direct briefing.

Submit your staffing brief and a specialist recruiter will confirm how our verification process applies to your department, which parts of it your governance team can rely on directly, and a realistic timeline for the appointment you need to make.

Dermatology is not a volume market. There are a finite number of consultants on the GMC specialist register for dermatology in the United Kingdom, and a smaller number again open to a move at any given time. That reality shapes how this appointment should be approached, and it is the first thing we will be direct with you about.

The same discipline applies further down the structure, whatever the role. A nurse who has run a general outpatient clinic for a decade is not automatically equipped to run phototherapy or assist in minor surgery, just as a clinic manager used to a single site needs different skills running compliance evidence across a multi-site group. We screen for the specific competencies each position demands, rather than accepting the word dermatology on a CV at face value.

Positions we recruit

Dermatology and skin clinic roles, clinical and non-clinical

A skin clinic runs on more than its consultants. We recruit across the whole structure, because a brilliant clinical appointment fails just as fast when the coordination behind it does not hold.

01

Consultant dermatologists

Substantive and sessional appointments, verified on the GMC specialist register for dermatology, including medical, surgical and paediatric subspecialty interests.

02

Dermatology specialist nurses

Nurses with genuine dermatology practice — phototherapy, patch testing, biologics monitoring, wound care and minor surgery assistance.

03

Advanced practitioners

Advanced nurse practitioners, physician associates and clinical practitioners running their own lists under agreed clinical supervision.

04

Aesthetic practitioners

Prescribers and practitioners for cosmetic and medical aesthetic lists, assessed on consultation skill and consent practice, not treatment menus alone.

05

Clinic and registered managers

Clinic managers, registered managers and operations leads for single sites and for groups opening additional locations.

06

Clinic support teams

Medical secretaries, patient coordinators, healthcare assistants and dermatology technicians — the roles that decide whether a clinic list runs to time.

Why it matters

Verification done before the shortlist, not after the offer

Dermatology sits across two regulatory worlds at once. A clinic can be carrying out registered activity in one room and unregistered cosmetic work in the next, and the checks that apply are not identical. Here is what we complete as standard.

GMC specialist register

For consultant appointments, we check the candidate holds registration with a licence to practise and appears on the specialist register for dermatology, together with their revalidation position. This is a check we carry out as part of our screening; it does not transfer any legal responsibility to us. Confirming a clinician's fitness to practise remains yours as the employer.

NMC and HCPC registration

Nursing and allied health candidates are checked against the live register, including revalidation date and any conditions recorded on the entry. This is a check we carry out as part of our screening; verifying registration before appointment remains your responsibility as the employer, regardless of any checks we complete.

Regulation 19 — fit and proper persons

Where the role sits inside a CQC-registered provider, we complete identity verification, enhanced DBS, references, right to work and a gap-checked employment history before shortlist. Regulation 19 compliance itself remains your responsibility as the registered provider.

Twelve-week placement guarantee

Weeks one to four, a full refund. Weeks five to eight, fifty per cent. Weeks nine to twelve, twenty-five per cent. Every permanent placement, without exception.

Registration requirements differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and not every treatment offered in a skin clinic falls inside registered activity. We work to your own registration position rather than assuming one, and we will ask about it during your specialist briefing.

The engagement process

Five stages. One outcome. The right appointment.

  1. Specialist briefing

A specialist recruiter reviews your department, case mix, governance requirements and the specific appointment you need to make. Direct, focused, no obligation.

  2. Credential verification

GMC or NMC record checked directly, employment history gap-analysed, and Regulation 19 screening completed where it applies — before you see a single name. Final responsibility to verify remains yours.

  3. Shortlist delivered

Three to five candidates presented with detailed profiles and a written verification summary, typically within three to five working days of engagement.

  4. Interviews

Interviews arranged directly between your department and your shortlist, with full visibility and control before any offer is made.

  5. Appointed and supported

Appointment confirmed when both sides are satisfied, with ongoing support and the full twelve-week replacement guarantee running from day one.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you recruit for private dermatology clinics or for hospitals?

Both. We place permanent staff into private skin clinics and dermatology groups, and into hospitals. The verification process is the same in either case, though the governance evidence a private group needs and the evidence a hospital trust needs are not always identical, so we confirm which applies during your specialist briefing.

How do you verify a consultant dermatologist's credentials?

We check that the candidate holds GMC registration with a licence to practise, that they appear on the specialist register for dermatology, and we check their revalidation position. We also gap-analyse the employment history rather than accepting the dates on the CV. All of this is completed before the candidate reaches your shortlist, and it is summarised in writing alongside the profile. This is a check we carry out as part of our own screening process; it does not transfer any legal responsibility to us. Confirming a clinician's registration and fitness to practise before appointment remains yours alone as the employer, regardless of any checks we complete.

Can you find dermatology nurses with specific clinical skills?

Yes, and we would encourage you to be specific. Phototherapy, patch testing, biologics monitoring, dermatological wound care and minor surgery assistance are genuinely different competencies, and a nurse experienced in one is not automatically capable in another. Tell us which skills your clinic list actually requires and we screen against those rather than against the word dermatology on a CV.

Do you cover medical aesthetics as well as medical dermatology?

We do. The two often sit inside the same business but they are assessed differently. For aesthetic appointments we look closely at consultation skill, consent practice and prescribing status, because the commercial pressure in that setting is real and a practitioner who cannot say no to an unsuitable request is a risk to the clinic rather than an asset.

How quickly can you deliver a shortlist?

For nursing, aesthetic and clinic support roles, typically three to five working days. Consultant appointments are honestly slower and we would rather say so upfront. The pool of dermatologists on the specialist register is finite, most are settled, and a genuine consultant search is measured in weeks rather than days. We will give you a realistic timeframe during your specialist briefing instead of an optimistic one.

What happens if the person does not work out?

Every permanent placement is covered by a twelve-week replacement guarantee. In weeks one to four you receive a full refund, in weeks five to eight fifty per cent, and in weeks nine to twelve twenty-five per cent. It applies to every permanent placement we make, without exception and without you having to argue for it.
